Volvo BM
Bolinder-Munktell was formed through a merger between the companies Munktell and Bolinder. The origins of Munktell date back to 1832. In 1913, the company introduced its first agricultural tractor: the Munktell ME 30-40. This heavy tractor weighed more than 8,200 kilograms and was equipped with a two-stroke, water-cooled, two-cylinder Bolinder hot-bulb engine producing between 30 and 40 horsepower.
Several additional models followed this first design. Although these later tractors were smaller, they still weighed around 4,000 kilograms. The first Munktell tractors entered the market in 1921 and were fitted with engines producing 22 and 30 horsepower. Weighing approximately 2,100 kilograms, these tractors were significantly lighter than their predecessors. Production of these models continued until 1934.
In 1941, the first BM tractor powered by a Volvo engine was introduced: the BM-4. This tractor featured a six-cylinder engine sourced from a Volvo truck of that era. Due to shortages of liquid fuels during the period, the BM-4 could also be equipped with a wood gas generator. During the Second World War, Bolinder-Munktell and Volvo already worked closely together, and this cooperation eventually led to Volvo acquiring Bolinder-Munktell in 1950.
Until the early 1960s, Volvo and Bolinder-Munktell continued to exist as separate brands. BM tractors from the 1950s could be recognised by their green colour with an orange engine, while Volvo tractors were painted red with a green engine. In 1959, three new tractor models were introduced in the characteristic Volvo colour scheme: red with a green engine. From that point onward, the tractors were marketed under the name Volvo BM.
After the takeover by the Finnish company Valmet in 1979, production was discontinued in 1985. The brand then continued under the name Volvo BM Valmet.
