John Deere USA, New generation

The John Deere New Generation series was introduced in 1960 as the successor to the popular John Deere “Two-Cylinder” tractors. The name “New Generation” was not chosen lightly; it marked the beginning of a new era in tractor development. It was the first series in which John Deere USA transitioned to four-cylinder engines. As early as 1953, John Deere had concluded that it could no longer rely on its two-cylinder engine concept. Despite the enormous success of this design, it was time for innovation. Demand was increasingly shifting toward larger tractors with greater capacity and versatility, and to meet this need, John Deere introduced the New Generation series in 1960.

In the agricultural industry, updates to tractor series typically involve only minor changes. The John Deere New Generation, however, was an exception. More than 95% of its components were completely new compared to the previous model. Once again, the name “New Generation” proved appropriate. At the time, John Deere set very high expectations for its design team. Not only were they expected to surpass competitors, but the New Generation also had to exceed all existing market standards. The cost of retooling production lines for the new engines alone amounted to the equivalent of approximately 70 million in today’s currency.
