Eicher

Germany's Eicher was founded in 1934, but it would not begin serial production of tractors until after World War II. It was the first manufacturer to use an air-cooled, direct-injection diesel engine in a tractor. In Germany, in addition to tractors, Eicher also built various agricultural machines such as plows and forklifts and even trucks. In the late 1990s the company was reasonably successful in building narrow-gauge tractors with the air-cooled Eicher engine, recognizable by a fan per cylinder.

In 1970, Eicher entered into a partnership with Massey Ferguson. This partnership put them in dire financial straits. Finally, in 1984, they were rescued by the Indian sister company. This sister company was established in 1957 to set up the Indian branch of the company. In 1988 Eicher was bought out and in 1991 it went bankrupt again. A relaunch followed, but they stopped building agricultural tractors in 1991. Eicher India built Eicher tractors until 2005. The Indian branch still exists but the Indian production of tractors and diesel engines has now been absorbed by Tafe.
