The John Deere New generation series was the successor to the popular John Deere "Two Cylinder" in 1960. The name "New generation" was not taken out of the blue but announced an era of a new generation of tractors. This was the first series of tractors in which John Deere USA switched to four-cylinder engines. As early as 1953, John Deere concluded that the company could no longer maintain its confidence in the two-cylinder engine. Despite the engine's resounding success, it was time for renewal. There was a growing demand for larger tractors with more capability and carrying capacity. To meet this need, John Deere introduced the New Generation in 1960.
In the agricultural industry, it is common for a series of tractors to be upgraded with minor changes. The John Deere USA New generation is an exception. More than 95% of all parts in this tractor were new compared to the previous model. Once again, the John Deere New generation lives up to its name. At the time, John Deere placed high demands on its design team. Not only were they expected to catch up with the competition, but the John Deere New generation also had to exceed all market standards. Just adapting the production line for the new engines had a price tag of 70 million today.
